Smear tests what do they have to do?

Im 15 and i wanted to know what the smear involves my mom said i have to have mine early because she had abnormal cells and could have been dead at 21 or something like that. Now im petrified in what they have to do and im like really shy about stuff like that so please help me id really appreciate it.
